Privacy policy

We collect as little as Guessberry needs to work: your guesses, and, if you choose to save them, an email address and a username. We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.
1. Who is responsible
Fruut Labs (Pty) Ltd (registration number 2026/622890/07) runs Guessberry and is responsible for your personal information under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
- Information officer
- Bavukile Vilane
- support@guessberry.com
- Address
- 19 Ameshoff St, Braamfontein, Johannesburg, 2001
2. What we collect
When you guess, even without an account:
- a random guest identity, kept in a cookie in your browser;
- each guess: the market, the outcome you chose, how sure you were, and when;
- your confirmation that you are 18 or older, and when you gave it;
- the Berries and accuracy your guesses earn.
When you save your guesses: your email address, and the username you choose. If you create a password (it is optional), we keep only a scrambled, one-way version of it (a hash), never the password itself. If you choose an avatar, we keep which of our berry pictures you picked. We never ask for a photo.
When you contact us through the Help page or by email: your email address, your message and its topic, the market it is about if there is one, and your username if you are signed in.
When you join the waitlist: your email address, the page you joined from, and the type of browser you used.
Collected automatically: your IP address and information about your browser and device. We use these to check that you are a person and not a bot, and our hosting providers record them in their logs to keep the service secure. We also count page visits, which pages are read, and roughly where visitors come from (the country, and the site that linked to us), without cookies and without identifying anyone.
We do not ask for your name, ID number, phone number, address or payment details, and we never need them.
Some markets are about elections. A guess is your view of what will happen, not a statement of who you support, and we do not ask about or record your political views. Your individual guesses are never shown to other people.
3. Why we use it
- To run Guessberry: recording your guesses, working out the crowd result, deciding markets, awarding Berries and building the leaderboard.
- To keep your record yours: using your email to sign you in with a code, on any device.
- To keep it fair: checking that guesses come from real people, allowing one guess per person per market, and finding abuse.
- To send the emails you asked for: sign-in codes; if you saved your guesses, an evening email saying how any of them turned out that day, which you can turn off from the email itself or your account page; and, if you joined the waitlist, the one email telling you Guessberry is open.
- To improve Guessberry: looking at overall patterns, never at individuals for their own sake.
We use your information because it is needed to provide the service you asked for, because we have a legitimate interest in keeping Guessberry fair and secure, or, for the waitlist, because you gave us your consent.
5. Who can see what
- Public: the crowd result on each market, and, once you choose a username, your profile page: your username, avatar, the month you joined, your Berries, how many guesses you have made and got right, and your rank on the leaderboard. You can hide your profile in Account, and then it shows only your username. Your leaderboard place stays visible either way.
- Private: your email address, and what you guessed on each market. Nobody else sees your guesses unless you share them yourself.
- Us: the people who run Guessberry can see account records where they need to, to decide markets, answer your questions and investigate abuse. Access is limited to named people.
We may publish or share overall results, such as what share of people expected an outcome, with the media or partners. These are totals and never identify you.
6. Companies that help us
These providers process personal information for us, only on our instructions and under their own data protection terms:
- Supabase stores the database and handles sign-in. Its servers are in Ireland, in the European Union.
- Vercel hosts the website and counts visits, in the United States and elsewhere.
- Cloudflare runs the check that you are a person.
- Resend sends our emails, from the United States.
- Google Workspace hosts our own email, including support@guessberry.com.
We do not sell your personal information to anyone. We will disclose it if the law requires us to.
7. Outside South Africa
Because of the providers above, your information is stored and processed outside South Africa, in the European Union and the United States. POPIA allows this where the information stays protected to a standard substantially similar to POPIA’s. We only use providers bound by data protection terms that meet that standard.
8. How long we keep it
- Your guesses and account are kept while you use Guessberry. If you ask us to delete them, we do so within 30 days, except where the law requires us to keep something. Crowd results already shown on closed markets are totals and stay as they are.
- Guest records are kept in the same way. You can ask us to delete one from the browser that holds it.
- The waitlist is kept until we send the email telling you Guessberry is open, and deleted within 30 days after that.
- Support messages are kept for 12 months after we close the conversation, so we can follow up if the same problem comes back, and then deleted.
- Security logs held by our providers are kept for short periods set by them.
9. Keeping it safe
Everything travels over an encrypted connection. The database only lets each person read their own guesses. You sign in with a code sent to your email or, if you choose to create one, a password. We never store a password itself, only a one-way hash of it that cannot be turned back into the password, and we email you whenever your password is changed. If there is ever a breach that affects your information, we will tell you and the Information Regulator, as POPIA requires.
10. Your rights
You can ask us to:
- tell you what personal information we hold about you, and give you a copy;
- correct it, if it is wrong;
- delete it;
- stop using it, where you have a right to object;
- take you off the waitlist, if you joined it.
Email support@guessberry.com from the address you use with Guessberry, so we know the request is yours. We will reply within 30 days. You can change your username yourself on your account page.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa): POPIAComplaints@inforegulator.org.za, 010 023 5200, Woodmead North Office Park, 54 Maxwell Drive, Woodmead, Johannesburg, 2191, inforegulator.org.za. We would like the chance to put it right first, so please tell us too.
11. Under 18s
Guessberry is only for people aged 18 or older. If we learn that we hold information about someone under 18, we delete it.
12. Changes to this policy
When what we collect or how we use it changes, we will update this page and the date at the top. If the change matters, we will tell you on Guessberry, and by email if you have an account.
